Despite a raucous crowd, the Maryland Terrapins held their composure down the stretch to hold on for a 71-67 victory over the Florida State Seminoles.
Star point guard Greivis Vasquez was the subject of much of the ire from Florida State fans as they spewed racist insults at him.
Vasquez spewed his own insults in the way he played, dropping 23 points, seven rebounds and seven assists on a venemous crowd that went home terribly disappointed.
Head coach Gary Williams said it was a huge road win for his team after such a terrible performance at Clemson, a game they still should have won despite the poor play.
He also said that Vasquez plays with a lot of emotion that rubs other people the wrong way, but that it’s his passion that makes him the great player he is.

The Maryland Terrapins turned in quite possibly their sloppiest performance of the season in a 62-53 loss to the Clemson Tigers.
Maryland shot poorly from the field and turned the ball over a mind-boggling 25 times against the Tigers.
Greivis Vasquez had just 11 points and two assists, and his nine turnovers led the team. Eric Hayes wasn’t much better, scoring just 10 points with two assists and five turnovers.
Jordan Williams was by far the most effective Terps, scoring 13 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. He looked like the only player ready to play ball.
Head coach Gary Williams will have to get his team regrouped before Thursday night’s contest at Florida State.

The Maryland Terrapins scored a major victory on Thursday night, knocking off the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee, 71-67. The Terps used an 18-7 run to start the second half to grab the lead and then held off a late Seminoles rally to remain a half-game back of Duke for first place in the ACC with a 5-2 record. The win also gave the Terps a two-game sweep of its season series with the Seminoles.
Greivis Vasquez played like a first-team all-conference guard, leading Maryland in points, rebounds, and assists for the game with 23, seven and seven. He got help in the way of 18 points from Landon Milbourne, and freshman big man Jordan Williams added 14. The contributions could not have been more important, considering that the bench only scored three points on the night.
But one could argue that the story of the game was the Terps’ defense on Seminoles stars Solomon Alabi and Chris Singleton. Maryland shut down both of them, as they combined for just 17 points on a dreadful 5 of 22 from the field. Had it not been for guard Derwin Kitchen’s career-high 29 points, Florida State might have been run out of its own gym.
Maryland takes on a reeling North Carolina team on Sunday in a game that the Terps are actually expected to win, given the Tar Heels’ struggles.

The Maryland Terrapins jumped on the Miami Hurricanes early and often to roll to an 81-59 victory before a packed Comcast Center.
It was a very balance scoring attack, as Greivis Vasquez and Landon Milbourne led the Terps with 16 points each. Eric Hayes and Sean Mosley each added 10 points.
Maryland’s full-court pressure and three-quarter court trapping caused Miami a ton of problems and resulted in a lot of turnovers. That allowed Maryland to get out in transition and get a bunch of easy buckets.
Gary Williams really has this team playing terrific basketball, and the only concern has to be whether the Terps will peak too early in the season.
The win moves Maryland to 4-1 in the ACC and in sole possession of first place.
The schedule turns decidedly more difficult in the coming weeks, beginning with Sunday night’s contest against the Clemson Tigers.
Clemson already has four losses in the ACC and seems to be falling apart, but they are a much different team at home than on the road. The Terps will be in for a battle.

Gary Williams reached a milestone on Saturday, earning the 1,000th victory of his Hall of Fame-career in the Maryland Terrapins’ 88-64 win over the visiting North Carolina State Wolfpack.
Four players reached double-figures in the scoring column for the Terps, led by Greivis Vasquez’ 19, 17 of them coming in the second half. Maryland also got the job done at the free throw line, going 24 of 33 from the stripe.
With a 3-1 mark, the Terps find themselves atop the ACC standings. And they could easily be 4-0 if not for a late-game collapse in a 2-point overtime loss at Wake Forest. With Miami visiting on Tuesday night, Maryland should continue to sit at the head of the table for at least another week.

The Maryland Terrapins took a break from the always difficult ACC play to beat up on Longwood, 106-55.
It was a chance for the Terps to give some of their reserves an extended look in a game that was never in doubt.
It’s the first time since 2006, that the Terps have managed to score more than 100 points in a game.
The 51-point win matched the largest victory margin since 2005, and it was the most points they have scored since that same year.
Things will get tougher on the Terps on Saturday when they host the North Carolina State Wolfpack.

The Maryland Terrapins turned in a gritty performance but came up short in a 85-83 overtime loss to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons.
Maryland led for much of the first half before Wake Forest made a run to take a three-point lead into the intermission.
Wake Forest led much of the second half, but Maryland made a late run. The Terps actually had a couple of chances to knock down the game-winning shot but couldn’t get it to fall.
It was more of the same in overtime, as the Terps had a couple of three-point looks for the game-winner.
Greivis Vasquez threw up a wild shot before Sean Mosley just missed on his three-point attempts.

The Maryland Terrapins got off to a fast start and didn’t look back in a 77-68 win over the Florida State Seminoles.
Greivis Vasquez lead the Terps with 22 points, and he and Eric Hayes really shot well from behind the three-point arc.
The win is a great start to the ACC schedule for the Terps, who lacked any big out of conference victories.
The Terps have little time to rest or celebrate with a tough game at Wake Forest coming up Tuesday night.
Head coach Gary Williams already complained about the schedule and the quick turnaround to the ACC.

The Maryland Terrapins have announced that head coach Ralph Friedgen will return for the 2010 season.
Friedgen met with athletic director Deborah Yow the past two days to discuss a wide range of topics.
Yow was satisfied with Friedgen’s feelings on 2009 and the future of the program and decided he deserved another season.
The coach assured her that he would help boost season ticket sales and put a winning product back out on the field.
Friedgen made it clear at the end of the year that he wanted to come back, saying his team didn’t quit on him so why should he quit on them?

The Maryland Terrapins simply ran out of steam late in a 19-10 loss to the Boston College Eagles.
On senior day and with the stands half empty, the Terps were unable to end a really ugly season on a positive note.
The Terps used a combination of Jamarr Robinson and Chris Turner at quarterback, but the offense didn’t respond.
The Terps had a chance to win the game late but chose to go for the first down on fourth and inches deep inside their own territory.
Needless to say, with the way the season has gone, Robinson was stuffed and the Terps turned the ball over on downs.
